Context
- The Oil India Ltd (OIL) leak in Assam has contaminated water bodies that flow into the Maguri Motapung Beel, a large wetland, and the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park (DSNP).
About the Park
- It is a national park in Assam located in Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts.
- It was designated a Biosphere Reserve in July 1997.
- The park is bounded by the Brahmaputra and Lohit Rivers in the north and Dibru river in the south.
- It mainly consists of moist mixed semi-evergreen forests, moist mixed deciduous forests, canebrakes and grasslands.
- It is the largest Salix swamp forest in north-eastern India, with a tropical monsoon climate with a hot and wet summer and cool and usually dry winter.
About the Beel
- Beel is the Local name for a Lake.
- Maguri Beel is a large wetland located near Guijan Ghat, gateway of the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park and Biosphere Reserve.
- A place where you have a very close view of thousands of Migratory birds.
- It is an Important Birding Site (IBA) by BirdLife International.
- It is located in the south bank of the Dibru River, which is a channel of the mighty Brahmaputra River.
- Pigeon-tailed jacana, ruddy Shelduck, yellow wagtails, purple swamphens, Asian open bills, northern pintails, northern lapwing, Eurasian coot and stonechats are commonly found birds in the beel.
