• The Brazilian government has received over $4.8 mn for continuing their actions to protect the ozone layer, officials said.
• The Ministry of Environment said that the money was agreed during recent meetings in Montreal, Canada, at which Brazil presented its actions to eliminate harmful compounds as part of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, first signed in 1987d.
• The resources were approved by the executive committee charged with implementing the Montreal Protocol.
• Despite environmental concerns, such as the deforestation of the Amazon, Brazil has been rewarded for its contribution to the targets set by the Protocol.
• According to official statistics, Brazil has cut its emissions of polluting gases by 34% in recent years, and has set the target of removing gases caused by air conditioners and aerosols by 2040.

Montreal Protocol:

• The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer (a protocol to the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer) is an international treaty designed to protect the ozone layer by phasing out the production of numerous substances that are responsible for ozone depletion.
• The two ozone treaties have been ratified by 197 parties, which includes 196 states and the European Union, making them the first universally ratified treaties in United Nations history.
