In a major success for tiger conservation, a tiger have returned in West Bengal’s Buxa Tiger Reserve. The last time there has been an undisputed claim of the presence of a tiger in the reserve located in north Bengal was in 1998.
About Buxa Tiger Reserve
- A tiger reserve in northern West Bengal
- It ranges in the Gangetic Plains bordering the Himalayas in the north.
- Lies in Alipurduar district.
- Its northern boundary runs along the international border with Bhutan.
- The Sinchula hill range lies all along the northern side of BTR and the eastern boundary touches that of the Assam state.
- It is the easternmost extension of extreme bio-diverse North-East India and represents highly endemic Indo-Malayan region.
- The fragile “Terai Eco-System” constitutes a part of this reserve.
- The Phibsoo Wildlife Sanctuary of Bhutan is contiguous to the north of BTR.
- Manas National Park lies on east of BTR.
- Serves as international corridor for Asian elephant migration between India and Bhutan.
- To the south-west, the Chilapata Forests form an elephant corridor to the Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary.
- Mining Area for Stromatolite bearing Dolomite Limestones.
- Rajabhatkhawa Vulture Breeding Centre at Buxa Tiger Reserve for the breeding and conservation of endangered Indian vultures.
