Civil Registration System (CRS) and Sample Registration System (SRS)

Civil Registration System (CRS) and Sample Registration System (SRS)

➖ CRS presents a count of registered births and deaths, while SRS provides an estimate of the total number births and deaths.

➖ The CRS data, therefore, is a subset of the SRS numbers.

➖ Over the years, there has been a steady increase in the registration of births and deaths.

➖ CRS is a record of all-cause deaths (and births). It does not categorise deaths by causes.

➖ Like CRS, the SRS also does not categorise deaths by cause. But it tries to estimate the total number of deaths in the country every year.

🔺 Note: Civil Registration System (CRS) in India is implemented by the Office of the Registrar General of India (ORGI) housed in the Ministry of Home Affairs, under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969.

✔️ SRS is the only official source of various demographic indicators in India except the census.

✔️ Registrar General of India publishes Sample Registration System(SRS) report.
