- National Commission for Schedule Tribes (NCST) has approved the proposal for five additional seats for tribals in Sikkim assembly.
- During a meeting the commission gave its approval to the proposal of increasing reserve seats for STs from 12 to 17 in Sikkim.
- Presently there are 32 members in Sikkim assembly and it would be increased to 40.
- Out of the proposed additional eight seats, five seats would be reserved for Limbu and Tamang tribes.
National Commission for Scheduled Tribes:
- National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) is an Indian constitutional body was established through Constitution (89th Amendment) Act, 2003.
- On the 89th Amendment of the Constitution coming into force on 19 February 2004, the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes has been set up under Article 338A on bifurcation of erstwhile National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes to oversee the implementation of various safeguards provided to Scheduled Tribes under the Constitution.
- With this amendment, the erstwhile National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes was replaced by two separate Commissions namely- (i) the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC), and (ii) the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST).
