What is Progress MS-06?

  • It’s a Russian spacecraft that was launched on June 14 and carrying cargo to the International Space Station (ISS). It lifted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan aboard a Soyuz-2.1a launcher, reaching orbit less than nine minutes after blast-off.
  • The Progress then began a series of thruster firings to guide its two-day journey to the space station.
  • It docked with the ISS on Friday. Within 24 hours after its successful launch, Kazakh authorities reported that a fragment of the Soyuz rocket ignited dry grass and caused a fire in the Karaganda region, about 600 km from the launch site, at the planned impact site for the first stage of the launcher.
  • It resulted in one person being killed and another injured while they were trying to extinguish the fire.
  • The spaceship has around 2.7 metric tons of cargo and supplies to the ISS, according to NASA.
  • These include fuel, water, food, compressed gases, medical and sanitary equipment, as well as nanosatellites to Russia’s Zvezda service module.
