What is Qwikipedia?

  • Ever been on Wikipedia to look up an article? More often than not, we start with one topic, click on a few links and within no time are reading about something else. Qwikipedia is a game that tries to quench this curiosity in us.
  • The objective is to get to a particular wiki page, starting from a specific article, using minimal clicks. There is no single correct answer, so we might surprise ourselves by finding new routes each time!

Starfish

  • There are over 1,500 living species of starfish, with habitats ranging from tropical coral reefs to sub-zero polar waters.
  • They are known for having five arms but some have more.
  • Species like the northern Pacific seastar are considered in the top 100 list of world’s worst invasive species.
  • Another well-known feature of starfish is its ability to regenerate damaged parts and lost limbs. Starfish typically feed on microalgae, sponges, bivalves, snails and other small animals.

Bivalvia

  • Clams, oysters, mussels, scallops… these are all examples of creatures belonging to the class ‘bivalvia’.
  • They all have a compressed body enclosed within a hinged shell. Most of them bury themselves under the sea bed to protect themselves from predators. Others lie on the sea-floor or attach themselves to the surfaces of rocks.
  • Though most bivalves do not exceed 10cm in length, some like the naval shipworm can grow to up to a metre.
  • Sea silk produced from sea valves used to be woven and used to pay taxes thousands of years ago, as is recorded on the Rosetta stone.

Rosetta Stone

  • Carved in 196 BC, the Rosetta Stone was found in 1799 in Egypt by French soldiers who were rebuilding a fort there. The stone is inscribed with text in three different scripts – hieroglyphic, demotic and Greek.
  • The Rosetta Stone basically says that the pharaoh was a good ruler who did many great things for the priests and the people of Egypt at the time. It was Francois Champollion who finally deciphered hieroglyphs in 1822.
  • The stone has been displayed at the British Museum since 1802, though Egypt has been requesting for its return or at least to loan it for the Grand Egyptian Museum at Giza.

Giza

  • Giza is the third largest city of Egypt after Cairo and Alexandria.
  • It is part of the Greater Cairo metropolis.
  • However, Giza is most famous for the Giza plateau which is the site of the Great Sphinx and the Great Pyramid of Giza, apart from various other historical monuments.
  • Did you know that the Great Pyramid was once considered as the site of the Prime Meridian as the reference point for a base longitude.
