The overarching objective of the Science for Sustainable Future Programme is mobilizing scientific knowledge and policy for sustainable development with the following three strategic programme objectives:
- Leveraging scientific knowledge in the management of the environment and natural resources
- Fostering policies and capacity-building in science, technology and innovation (STI)
- Contributing to disaster preparedness and mitigation
The Science for Sustainable Future programme actions focus on:
- Promoting STI policies and access to knowledge in the Caribbean
- Building capacities in the basic sciences, including through the International Basic Sciences Programme (IBSP), engineering and for the use of renewable energy
- Mobilizing broad-based participation in science, technology and innovation
- Assisting societies to respond to freshwater systems under stress, incorporating the work of the International Hydrological Programme (IHP) and the World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP)
- Enabling the application of ecological and each sciences for sustainability, including through the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme and the International Geoscience Programme (IGSP)
- Natural disaster risk reduction and mitigation
In implementing its programme actions, the Science for Sustainable Future Programme works closely with partners such as the National Commissions for UNESCO, the CARICOM Secretariat, the University of the West Indies, CARISCIENCE, the Caribbean Sciences Foundation, CDEMA, National Disaster Management Agencies, Coastal and Environmental Management Agencies and relevant ministries.
