• Investment in science, technology and innovation (STI) is an important driver of economic growth and social development. UNESCO works to assist countries to invest in STI, to develop national science policies, to reform their science system and to build capacity to monitor and evaluate performance through STI indicators. Many countries have benefited from UNESCO’s assistance including over twenty in Africa.
• Every five years, the UNESCO Science Report monitors the state of the support system for STI around the world and analyses emerging trends.
• In 2011, UNESCO launched the Science, Technology and Innovation Global Assessment Programme (STIGAP) to widen the scope of standard STI assessment, to take into account county-specific contexts including the social dimension, and emerging knowledge on the relationship between technological progress and sustainable development.
