Section 24 of the Right to Information Act

Section 24 of the Right to Information Act (RTI) exempts security and intelligence agencies from RTI provisions, except in the case of allegations of human rights violations and corruption.
In the past, the government had used Section 24 of the RTI to deny information pertaining to actions of the security forces, on the grounds that no human rights violations were involved.
It is universally accepted that the right to life is a human right, which means that anyone who has been violently killed – as the CRPF personnel were – have had their human rights violated.

Why in news?

In its reply to an RTI application, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has said that no human rights were violated in the brutal killing of 25 CRPF personnel by left-wing extremists in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district on April 24, 2017.
