Mahabalipuram is also famous for its structural temples. Two of these temples that have made it to the heritage list are the Shore Temple and the Olakkannesvara Temple.

The Shore Temple is named thus because it overlooks the shore of the Bay of Bengal. It is built with granite blocks dating back to 8th century AD. It is a complex of three temples built on a a raised mass of land.

The Olakkannesvara Temple is also known as the ‘Old Lighthouse’. It is built directly above the Mahishasuramardini mandapa on a hillock and provides scenic views. It is dedicated to an incarnation of Lord Shiva.
