• Mahabalipuram is also famous for its structural temples. Two of these temples that have made it to the heritage list are the Shore Temple and the Olakkannesvara Temple.

• The Shore Temple is named thus because it overlooks the shore of the Bay of Bengal. It is built with granite blocks dating back to 8th century AD. It is a complex of three temples built on a a raised mass of land.

• The Olakkannesvara Temple is also known as the ‘Old Lighthouse’. It is built directly above the Mahishasuramardini mandapa on a hillock and provides scenic views. It is dedicated to an incarnation of Lord Shiva.
